Baking soda to remove tartar

Sodium bicarbonate, also known as baking soda, can help treat and prevent tartar buildup on your teeth. It does this by softening tartar and balancing the acids in your mouth that create plaque and stop it from turning into tartar. Additionally, because baking soda is mildly abrasive, it can be used to scrub away surface stains and whiten your teeth. However, it cannot remove deeper stains.
Only use a little bit of baking soda and be careful not to damage your tooth enamel by scrubbing too harshly. Brush your teeth with a mixture of baking soda and water on your toothbrush, or mix it in with your toothpaste. You could also leave a paste of baking soda and water on for 15 minutes for extra effect.
